Casa Bispo — Curated by your hosts
These are our personal favourites— places we love and return to. Tavira is a gem of the Algarve, small enough to feel like a village, beautiful enough to take your breath away. We hope you fall in love with it as much as we have.
EAT & DRINK
Where to eat
From a Michelin-starred experience to a quiet table close to home — our picks for every mood.
BAKERY
Xisto
The best bakery in Tavira, full stop. Xisto bakes exceptional sourdough and pastries each day and sells what they have until it's gone. It draws a crowd for good reason — once you've been, you'll understand why.
Host tip: Pre-ordering your bread is strongly recommended — it sells out fast. Pop in or call ahead the day before to reserve your loaf.
Opens early — go before 10am for best selection
FINE DINING
A Mesa
Tavira's Michelin-starred restaurant and a genuinely special experience. The cooking is refined and rooted in Algarve produce, with a menu that changes with the seasons. Perfect for a celebratory dinner or simply because you deserve it.
Host tip: Book well in advance — this fills up quickly, especially in summer. Don't leave it to the last minute.

Palácio
Located right on Bishop's Square — just steps from Casa Bispo — Palácio sits within a beautiful boutique hotel. The menu is small and focused, the setting is quietly elegant. A lovely spot for an unhurried dinner close to home.
Host tip: A great choice when you don't want to go far — but make sure to book in advance. The square itself is magical in the evening — arrive a little early for a drink outside.

Terrazza
Just 60 metres from Casa Bispo, right on the riverfront — Terrazza has a great feel to it. Perfect for a relaxed drink watching the river, a snack, or a simple meal when you don't want to go far. Especially beautiful at sunset. The tuna dish is highly recommended.
Host tip: A great option for a first evening drink after arrival — sit by the river and soak it all in. Order the tuna — you won't regret it. No booking needed for drinks, but worth calling ahead for food.

GASTROBAR · TAPAS
Come na Gaveta
A gastrobar with real personality — this is the kind of place where good conversations happen. A firm favourite among expats living in Tavira, and easy to see why. The menu is Portuguese-inspired tapas, changing seasonally, with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that keeps locals and visitors coming back.
Host tip: The name comes from a local Tavira tradition — "comer na gaveta" means eating from the drawer, as shopkeepers would hide their lunch in a drawer when customers arrived. A place with character, in every sense. Book in advance.
Av. Dr. Mateus Teixeira de Azevedo, 36
TAPAS · WATERFRONT
D'Gusta
A brilliant tapas restaurant right at the Quatro Águas ferry dock — perfect to combine with a day at Tavira Island. Great variety of dishes, relaxed atmosphere and a lovely waterfront setting by the river. Excellent value and the kind of place you'll want to come back to.
Host tip: Stop here on your way back from the beach for a long, lazy lunch with a cold drink and the river views. Makes the perfect end to a beach day.

Classic Portuguese grilled chicken — simple, honest and delicious. Located right on Rua João Vaz Corte Real, the same road as Casa Bispo. Great value, perfectly grilled chicken with fries. Sometimes you don't need anything more than this.
Host tip: If you're a grilled chicken enthusiast, this place will not disappoint. Take it home or eat in — either way, it hits the spot. A local staple and one of the best value meals in Tavira. No booking needed, just turn up.

TRADITIONAL · GRILLED FISH
Três Palmeiras
A true Tavira institution for fresh grilled fish. Charcoal-grilled to order — dorada, mackerel, cuttlefish and whatever the catch of the day brings. No fuss, no frills, just honest traditional Portuguese cooking at its best. Fixed price includes fish, potatoes, salad and bread. Write your name on the chalkboard when you arrive and wait to be called — that alone tells you everything about the place.
Host tip: Go hungry. The portions are generous and the fish is the real deal. No bookings — just turn up, write your name on the chalkboard and wait to be called.

TRADITIONAL · FRESH FISH & SEAFOOD
A Barquinha
A classic, family-run fish restaurant in the true Portuguese tradition. The menu changes daily depending on what's fresh — sea bass, sea bream, tuna, sardines — simply grilled and served with care. Julia, the owner, welcomes every guest like an old friend. The African shrimp starter is not to be missed.
Host tip: This is the kind of restaurant that reminds you why you came to Portugal. Call ahead to reserve — you will not get a table if you walk in.

MARKET & LOCAL
Market & local finds
The best way to eat in Tavira is to shop like a local.
MERCADO MUNICIPAL
Tavira Market
Daily fresh produce
The heart of local food life in Tavira. The market is the place to pick up the freshest fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and herbs — all sourced locally. Go in the morning when everything is at its best and the atmosphere is alive.
LOCAL FARM · ORGANIC PRODUCE
Maria Flaminga
A local organic farm tucked behind Aldi — almost in the centre of Tavira. Maria Flaminga grows and sells beautiful bio vegetables and fruits, all grown just around the corner. A wonderful place to pick up the freshest, most flavourful produce you'll find in town.
Host tip: Supporting a local farm this close to the centre is a rare thing — well worth a visit. The quality of the produce is exceptional.
Behind Aldi · Central Tavira
JUICE BAR
A Laranja do João
Right inside Tavira's municipal market — João squeezes fresh juice to order in whatever flavour you fancy. Mango, pineapple, orange and whatever's in season. Exceptional value and the perfect morning pick-me-up before or after a browse around the market stalls.
Host tip: This is a personal favourite — I stop by 4 or 5 mornings a week after my beach walk. Ask for whatever's in season and let João do his thing. You won't be disappointed. No booking needed, just turn up.

SUN & SEA
The beaches
Tavira is blessed with some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the Algarve — all barrier island beaches protected by the Ria Formosa natural park.
BEST BEACH · NO CAR NEEDED
Ilha de Tavira
Shuttle boat from the centre of town · 10 min
The best beach in the area, and the easiest to get to — no car or transport needed. Simply walk to the shuttle boat from the centre of town, hop on, and you're there in minutes. A long, wide stretch of golden sand on a barrier island, backed by dunes and the Ria Formosa natural park. There are a few beach bars and restaurants on the island too.
DRIVE REQUIRED
Manta Rota
~20 min by car
A quieter, more low-key alternative to Ilha de Tavira — Manta Rota is a relaxed village beach with calm, shallow water, making it ideal for families or those looking for a more peaceful day out. A lovely spot for sunset.
GREAT FOR KIDS
Praia do Barril
~15 min · Via Pedras d'el Rei
A must if you're travelling with children — park at Pedras d'el Rei and hop on the famous little miniature train that winds through the salt marshes to the beach. The train ride itself is half the fun. The beach is stunning and the walk back through the Ria Formosa is unforgettable. Famous for its curious anchor cemetery on the dunes.
Host tip: If you're heading to Barril anyway and you're an octopus lover, stop by Casa do Polvo in Santa Luzia on the way. They specialise entirely in octopus — it's what the village is famous for and this is the place to try it.

Things to do
Some of our favourite ways to explore the area — on two wheels or on foot.
CYCLING
Bike Rental
There's a bike rental shop right on Rua João Vaz Corte Real — less than 100 metres from Casa Bispo. Hiring a bike is one of the best ways to explore the area at your own pace, and the routes from Tavira are beautiful.
Host tip: Two great rides from the door: East towards Santa Luzia & Barril Beach — a lovely flat ride along the coast through Santa Luzia, a pretty fishing village famous for its octopus. Stop for lunch at Casa do Polvo — they specialise entirely in octopus and it is exceptional. Continue on to Pedras d'el Rei for the miniature train to Barril Beach. A perfect day out. West towards Cacela Velha — one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve, perched on a hilltop overlooking the Ria Formosa. A stunning ride and well worth the trip.

NATURE WALK · RIA FORMOSA
The Tidal Beach Walk
One of the most magical things you can do near Tavira — walk out across the sandbanks and tidal flats of the Ria Formosa at low tide. The landscape is unlike anything else: vast, quiet, and utterly beautiful. Keep an eye on the time and always make sure you head back before the tide comes in too far.
Host tip: Important: This walk is only possible around low tide. Check the tide times before you go and always turn back with plenty of time to spare — do not wait until the water is already rising around you. When in doubt, head back early.
